Papers of Ridge Riley, 1904-1980.

The collection contains a general history of football at Penn State including material on rule developments, Beaver Field (now Beaver Stadium), traditions and spirit, administration of athletics, and origins and history of the game. Also, includes material for Riley's book, The Road to Number One, arranged chronologically by the tenure of the individual football coach. Items of special note are letters from former Penn State football players, letters concerning President Richard M. Nixon overlooking Penn State for his national champions in 1969, and a transcript of an interview with coach Joe Paterno. The non-football material contains Penn State Alumni Association historical and organizational records, 1943-1970, including executive reports, budget projections, and correspondence. Riley's personal papers include correspondence, clippings about or written by him, non-football sports clippings, and jokes. Correspondents include Sister Jeremy, a nun who taught at St. Joseph's Girls School in Korea, and alumni and friends of Riley who wrote to him while serving in the armed forces during World War II. Also, includes Riley's college scrapbook.

Born in Brooklyn in 1926, Joseph Vincent Paterno had his first brush with fame in the 1940s when he and his younger brother, George, played for Brown University with Joe at quarterback and George at fullback.
